AC/E once again this year lent its support to the Festival de Música y Danza de Granada in the co-production of concerts to mark the 4th Centenary of the death in Madrid of Tomás Luis de Victoria, the most prestigious Spanish polyphonic composer of the Golden Age.
The commemoration provides an opportunity to present a complete cycle for this 60th edition comprising four concerts including lunchtime performances and an organ recital, thus offering audiences the chance to hear not only some of the composer's key works but also pieces from throughout Spanish musical history, such as the 18 responds of shadows, or the Office of the Dead.
The four concerts were delivered by the Ensemble Plus Ultra, conducted by Australian musicologist Michael Noone, with voices provided by Juan Carlos Asensio's Schola Antiqua. The organist was Andrés Cea Galán, and the polyphonic choir was provided by Britain's Stile Antico and the Barcelona-based ensemble Musica Reservata.
