15 november 2023

● The jam, organized by DEV and Acción Cultural Española, will be held online and will have a physical location in Malaga at the EVAD school.
● Participants will have a week to develop games using public domain cultural content generated in Spain as a base.

On Monday, November 27, the sixth edition of the Open Culture Game Jam will begin, an initiative organized by DEV and promoted by Acción Cultural Española (AC/E).

Participants will have 7 days - until Sunday, December 3 - to develop games using public domain cultural content generated in Spain as a base. Furthermore, the special theme of this edition will be water, in a year in which the centenary of the death of Joaquín Sorolla is celebrated, an artist who has often incorporated this element into his work.

The jam will have two modalities, online and in person. The face-to-face modality will be held in Malaga at the headquarters of EVAD Escuela Superior Videojuegos y Arte Digital, which will open its doors to participants from Monday, November 27 to Wednesday, November 29, with their participation being able to continue online until Sunday, November 3. December. In the opening session on the 27th, intellectual property, art and literature professionals will give some ideas on how to deal with the topic of the jam.

The projects most valued by a group of video game industry professionals will appear highlighted in a physical exhibition that will be organized during the first months of 2024 at OXO, the Video Game Museum in Malaga.

Talks about intellectual property and culture

In the opening session of the jam on Friday, November 16, Nerea Sanjuan, director of Andersen's Culture, Sports and Entertainment area, will give a talk about intellectual property in video games and how to find works in the public domain. In addition, Concha Perea, writer, and María Emege, illustrator, will give a brief review of the different references to water in the main Spanish literary and pictorial works in the public domain.

All information, rules and registration forms are available on the jam website:  www.cultura-abierta.es  and on Twitter:@JCulturaAbierta

(This year's illustration design, by artist Rubén Calles (@ruben_oluwa), is based on Joaquín Sorolla's The White Boat (1905), a Spanish artwork available within the public domain.)

About the Open Culture Game Jam

The Open Culture Game Jam was born taking as a reference the "Public Domain Jam", which tried to encourage creators to use public domain licenses instead of continuing to make zombie games. This event picks up the torch and takes it to our country to reclaim all the culture that has been created within our borders.

The first five editions were a success in participation and attendance at the open exhibition days of the best video games created at the event. All games developed can be found here: https://itch.io/c/459508/jam-cultura-abiertas-collection
