The Museo del Prado opened to the public on 19 November 1819 as a Royal Museum of Painting and Sculpture. In 2019, they celebrate their Bicentenary a commemoration that will reveal the path covered since 1819 until today.
The driving idea of the Bicentenary is to celebrate the Museo del Prado as the great gift that the Spanish nation has given and to explain how, as a result of social and political events, a private collection conceived for the delight of a few ended up becoming the main cultural institution of all Spaniards. Around this idea gravitates the ambitious programme of the Bicentenary that has the support of Acción Cultural Española (AC/E) to some of its projects.
