Following the confirmation of Spain's participation in Expo Osaka in 2025, on May 20 Acción Cultural Española (AC/E) - the public entity responsible for managing Spain's presence at the Universal and International Exhibitions - called an open public competition for the selection of the proposals for the architectural design and comprehensive exhibition offer of the Spanish Pavilion at the Universal Expo Osaka 2025 (Kansai, Japan).
The architecture and design studios Néstor Montenegro, Enorme Studio and Smart and Green Design will be in charge of designing the Spain Pavilion at Expo Osaka 2025.
Under the motto "Kuroshio's current", the Pavilion is located on a 3500 m2 plot. The concept developed in the project stems from the Kuroshio current, which was one of the great secrets of Spanish navigation for centuries, and which established a channel of cultural and commercial enrichment between our continents. Based on this idea, the Pavilion is presented as a comprehensive experience, which drinks from the ocean and the sun as elements that connect Spain and Japan and which, with an architectural proposal that blends with a combination of art, design, gastronomy and dissemination, offers the image of a country committed to the great challenges of the future.
The Pavilion, like the ocean, is an example of circularity, made from natural, sustainable materials with low environmental impact, even from reuse and recycling processes.
After the Dubai Expo 2020, Osaka will host the next World Expo in 2025. Under the theme "Designing the future society for our lives", it plans to meet between April 13 and October 13, 2025 , to more than 150 participating countries, international organizations and 28.2 million visitors, of which 3.5 million will come from outside Japan.
The venue for Expo Osaka 2025 is Yumeshima (“Island of Dreams”), an artificial island located in Osaka Bay, Kansai, Japan.
The proposal of the three studios has been selected by the Board of Directors of AC/E, at the proposal of a Jury, for the design of the Spanish Pavilion at Expo Osaka 2025.
The contest Jury, chaired by AC/E's Finance and Resources Director, Juan Luis Gordo, was made up of ten renowned experts and, together with the winner, awarded a prize to each of those qualified with the other First 4 positions: UTE Icaria Atelier SL – Francisco Javier Terrados Cepeda – Fernando Suárez Corchete, UTE B720 – External Reference, UTE Mangado y Asociados – Pablo Menéndez SLU and UTE Selgascano Arq. – FRPO Rodríguez & Oriol.
