The 25th edition of SIEL is slated for 7 to 17 February 2019 and features Spain as the guest of honour. SIEL is the biggest book fair held in the Maghreb regions and a broad range of countries are represented.
The Spanish stand, managed by Acción Cultural Española and the Ministry of Culture and Sport, will show a sample of the highlights of Spanish publishing of the past year in all fields, in Spanish as well as the other languages spoken in the country, and the books that have won the main literary prizes.
A packed cultural programme has also been organised in connection with the fair to promote knowledge of Spanish literature and its presence in Morocco and to strengthen links and the cultural dialogue between the two countries. Entitled “The journey of languages”, it focuses on the newest Spanish literature as well as the close relationship between Spain and Morocco, with special emphasis on translations in both languages. The programme features at least two daily activities such as the conference “Two great poets and their translators”, the presence of books and authors centred on Morocco, and the section “Spanish further south”, with Moroccan writers who write in Spanish.
In addition to all these activities, a tribute to Juan Goytisolo will be held in which Spanish authors will take part, as well as two photograph exhibitions: one on Goytisolo featuring photographs related to his novel Campos de Níjar (published in English as Níjar Country) and another devoted to manuscripts of Al-Andalus in Spanish libraries.
