The Semana Negra of Gijón was born 25 years ago with the idea of being a new kind of festival about Crime Fiction in which literary elements would mix with playful elements, to become a celebration of culture on the street.
Initially the festival was only about Crime Fiction, but soon has incorporated festive elements that had traditionally been associated in Asturias to cultural celebrations such political solidarity events, concerts, book fair, terraces of bars, markets and ethnic cuisine.
Throughout these years it went from 73,000 attendees in its first year to over a million in the past, and a duration of seven days at 10. From 60 guests to 250, and 15 journalists accredited to more than 150, becoming one of the most important festivals in Europe and an international center of reference.
AC/E collaborates in this 22nd edition by supporting the participation of international programmers Lilit Thwaites and Michael Webster, Melbourne Writers Festival, and Ernesto Mallo, Director of BAN! Buenos Aires Negra.
