Los surcos del Azar by Paco Roca is a graphic novel about the Spanish Republican fighters who helped free Paris during the Second World War. Through the memories of Miguel Ruiz, a Spanish Republican in exile in France, Paco Roca reconstructs the history of La Nueve, a company commanded by Captain Dronne that was part of General Leclerc’s armoured division and was made up chiefly of Spanish Republicans. It is a fascinating and forgotten story about Spain’s contribution during the Second World War. This book has received, among others, the Zona Cómic award for the best national comic of 2013, the grand prix at Romics, Rome 2014, the prize for the best work by a Spanish author at the Barcelona Saló Internacional del Cómic 2014 and the Critics’ award of 2014 for the best national work.
