Libros mutantes 2014

Libros mutantes 2014

Libros Mutantes started out in 2010 with the aim of giving visibility to the independent publishing scene which, despite experiencing a period of amazing creativity, lacked the necessary points of distribution or dissemination other than specialised circles.

In 2011 La Casa Encendida decided to involve itself fully in the project by hosting the fair, which thus gained greater importance in the publishing world.

Throughout the three days it runs, thousands of visitors consult the publications of fifty or so publishers and artists from all over the world, listen to lectures and take part in workshops. The international and participatory nature of the fair was enhanced at the 2013 event through the collaboration of AC/E, which brought as a guest Max Schumman, associate director of the famous bookshop Printed Matter, which organises New York Art Book Fair (NYABF).

Max Schumann’s participation in Libros Mutantes marked the establishment of an initial direct contact between Spanish publishers and one of the greatest worldwide specialists. As well as delivering the main lecture at Libros Mutantes 2013, Schumman analysed the Spanish publications and selected the most salient projects to be part of his new project to create a section devoted specially to Spanish publications at Printed Matter Inc.

Also thanks to AC/E, a representative of La Casa Encendida and the fair’s curators travelled to New York to take part in NYABF. This marked a new milestone in self-publishing in our country, as although Spain’s publishing scene is very active and creative, no Spaniard had ever taken part in NYABF, the most prestigious international event on the self-publishing scene.

In view of the huge benefits obtained from the collaboration with AC/E, the chief aim iin 2014 is to open up the fair to a new areas hitherto absent from the Spanish self-publishing scene: Latin America.

For this purpose the Directorate General for Cultural Policy and Industries and Books has requested AC/ E’s collaboration through its PICE/Visitor Programme to enable Ana Luiza Fonseca (Feira de Arte Impressa do Tijuana) and Victoria Gondra, author of the Delmmatiny research project on fanzines in Buenos Aires (Argentina), to take part as guests at this year’s event.
