The 59th Venice International Art Show takes place from April 23 to November 27, 2022, and is curated by Cecilia Alemani. "As the first Italian woman to hold this position, I intend to give artists a voice to create unique projects that reflect their visions and our society," said Alemani. Cecilia Alemani is an art curator and has organized numerous exhibitions by contemporary artists. She is currently the director and chief curator of High Line Art, New York's urban park public art program, and was the curator of the Italian Pavilion at Biennale Arte 2017.
The main exhibition of the Biennial is the participation for this edition of two contemporary Spanish artists: Teresa Solar (Madrid, 36 years old) and June Crespo (Pamplona, 40 years old).
The central exhibition, entitled ‘The Milk of Dreams’ in the Central Pavilion of the Giardini, and in the Corderie, Artiglierie and the open-air spaces of Gaggiandre and Giardino delle Vergini in the Arsenale complex and has the participation of more than two hundred artists from 58 countries. The exhibition features contemporary works and new projects conceived specifically for the Art Biennale, presented in dialogue with historical works from the 19th century onwards. Among the selected works of deceased artists, there are the Spanish Maruja Mallo (1902-1995) and Remedios Varo (1908-1963), both surrealist painters, the cartoonist Josefa Tolrá (1880-1959), in addition to the British born in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria Georgiana Houghton (1814-1884).
