Guanajuato International Film Festival (GIFF) – formerly known as Expression in Short – is aimed at creating a sound cinematographic culture open to its diverse expressions. Founded in 1998 in the city of San Miguel de Allenda in the throes of an acute crisis of the national film industry, it sets out to establish collaboration networks between filmmakers and new generations of creators. Through conferences, round tables and meetings with authorities and prominent people from the national and international industry, GIFF promotes and disseminates Mexican cinema and that of other countries in order to consolidate the film industry through mechanisms that facilitate production. Over the past fifteen years GIFF has become consolidated as the most important platform for young filmmakers of Latin America, bringing together talented new people and renowned film industry experts every year.
Throughout the history of Guanajuato International Film Festival Spain has been closely involved in the event. In the 2012 festival alone 228 Spanish films were entered in the international section, eight of which were selected in the different categories.
A/C is taking part in this project as part of its creator mobility programme by backing the participation of the Spanish film directors David Muñoz, the maker of About Ndugu, and Chema García, the maker of Mystery, both of which were recently premiered at the Berlin Film Festival. AC/E’s goal is to foster Spain’s presence and strengthen its international reputation in the film world. During the festival the participants show their works, take part in round tables, are available to the international media covering the event and talk to Mexican and international filmmakers, producers and distributers, creating opportunities to develop new possibilities of collaboration and coproduction.
