Encuentro de Editores Iberoamericanos 2014

Encuentro de Editores Iberoamericanos 2014

Geared to a young cultural audience interested in books and reading, as well as to book professionals, the Encuentro de Editores Iberoamericanos (Meeting of Ibero-American publishers) will carry on the reflection begun at the meeting of European publishers held in the Casa del Lector.

Considering book publishing to be a cultural, but also economic, activity, during six sessions participants will debate on key issues in the analysis of publishing – an activity that needs to seek a balance between the dissemination of culture and economic feasibility as a business project. The sessions will begin on Monday 29th with a reflection on the figure of the publisher in the digital age, recalling the values and tradition of a profession that is sometimes questioned vis-à-vis the new possibilities offered by new technologies for disseminating content.

This will be followed by an overview of the digital transition in book publishing in Ibero-America, and an analysis of the situation of intellectual property in Ibero-America, and the effects of piracy in the publishing industry.

The second day will begin with a reflection on the future of publishing in Spanish and Portuguese, including a view of cultural and literary content in Ibero-America from the perspective of the American publishing market, in both Spanish and English. The rest of the day will specifically address the phenomenon of independent publishers, their contribution to cultural diversity, and the creation and development of independent business projects in two sessions.

The closing session, which is open to the general public, will provide a summary of the issues discussed, with conclusions and recommendations, presented in a final document that will be sent to public institutions related to books and the cultural industry, media and book professionals. In addition to the debates, in which only publishers will take part, the event will include informative sessions in which institutional representatives of books from several countries will supply detailed information about their respective publishing markets, as well as about the main books fairs in Spanish that have become established meeting points for the publishing market and cultural activity.

In addition to the sessions for professionals only, the programme will include two meetings with the general public: a lecture given by a publisher-author capable of conveying the double perspective to an audience of readers, and a round table on the subjects discussed at the event, providing an insight into the profession of publisher for society in general, and references and sources of inspiration for good practice for all related audiences.
