Concierto por el Centenario de Sebastian Durón

Concierto por el Centenario de Sebastian Durón

2016 marks the third Centenary of the death of Sebastián Durón (1660–1716), who was born in the town of Brihuega (Guadalajara) and died on 3 August 1716 during exile in Cambo les Bains in the French Basque region, where he is buried. Sebastian Durón was chapel master of the cathedrals of Seville, Cuenca, El Burgo de Osma, Palencia and the royal chapel of Charles II in Madrid. Sent into exile following the arrival of Philip V of Bourbon owing to his sympathies for Archduke Charles of Austria, he worked in Bayonne for Charles II’s widow, Mariana of Neuberg.

Sebastian Durón is renowned for his operas and zarzuelas, as well as being a great composer of religious music. He is held to be one of the foremost Spanish musicians of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

Brihuega council has put together a cultural project curated by Jesus Villa Rojo and Antonio Martín to commemorate the third centenary of the great composer. It includes an exhibition, several concerts and conferences, and a twinning with the town of Cambo les Bains. AC/E is supporting the production of the concert given by La Grande Chapelle conducted by Albert Recassens at 8.30 pm on 3 August at the church of Santa María in Brihuega, during which the group will perform Sebastián Durón’s Mass for the Dead.

The council of Cambo les Bains is also running a commemorative programme based around Sebastian Durón and designed with the assistance of Marie-Bernadette Dufourcet-Hakim, a musicologist at the University of Bordeaux, and Begoña Lolo, director of the music research centre (Centro Superior de Investigación y Promoción de la Música, CSIPM) at Madrid’s Universidad Autónoma. This project likewise enjoys the support of AC/E, which has awarded Mobility grants to the Spanish group Harmonía del Parnás directed by Marian Rosa Montagut.
