To mark the centenary of the birth of the poet, dramatist and novelist Salvador Espriu (Santa Coloma de Farnés, 10 July 1913 – Barcelona, 22 February 1985), Acción Cultural Española has scheduled a programme of activities based on the man and his work.
Salvador Espriu is one of the most significant writers of the post-war period and one of the most important Catalan poets. Although he became known as a narrator, his late foray into poetry did not prevent him from being rapidly recognised in both Catalan and universal literature. He also played an important role in the revival of Catalan theatre. He received the Montaigne Prize in 1972. He was a candidate for the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1971 and 1983. In 1972 he was distinguished with the Prize of Honour for Catalan Literature and the Gold Medal awarded by the regional government (Generalitat) of Catalonia in 1980. In 1982 he received the Gold Medal of the City of Barcelona. He was awarded an honorary degree by the universities of Barcelona and Toulouse. In 1982 he was granted the Cross of Alfonso X the Wise, which he refused.
