This project is the Edinburgh gallery Interview Room 11’s fourth bid to give visibility to Spanish artists in Scotland’s capital. On previous occasions the Brutalist building where the gallery used to be based provided a unifying thread, but its new location on Edinburgh’s outskirts makes the challenge much more ambitious, as the artists do not just need to engage with the gallery but also with more unknown parts of the city.
The artist Carolina Cruz performs an unproductive and absurd action: walking around in circles in various parts of Edinburgh. The exhibition consists of photographs documenting this action, the title of the action accompanied by the diameter of the circle, the identification of the place, and the day and duration. It will highlight the place and how this location engages with the artist.
Someone walks in circles because they are lost, because they are trapped in an endless cycle, or as a statement of resistance to the world and its injustices, which are unceasing. Walking in circles while the earth rotates on its axis and around the sun, while the moon rotates around the earth. Walking in circles like a dog pacing around its kennel, like the eternal repetition of the cycle of life and the seasons. Or walking in circles as the Taoists do: so as not to lose themselves, to calm their minds and hearts, to make sense of life and come to terms with what is senseless. The fact that this exhibition is being held in a shopping centre adds even more value to this action. Wandering aimlessly, in a manner that is completely opposite to the way people walk around a shopping centre: fully guided and conditioned by a sole aim, consumption.
