Carmen - Shakespeare. Olga Mesa and Francisco Ruiz

Carmen - Shakespeare is a choreographic, artistic and audio-visual project by the Asturian choreographer and visual artist Olga Mesa and the Basque multimedia artist Francisco Ruiz de Infante. It consists of four choreographic pieces that are progressively developed over a four-year period (2013–16).

The creative process involves artists’ residencies in different spaces and places linked to LAB_REC workshops in which the artists compare their experiences of thematic aspects of the project’s four acts with local participants.

The Espace Darja in Casablanca, in collaboration with the Instituto Cervantes in Casablanca and the Spanish Embassy in Morocco, hosted an initial LAB_REC workshop from 18 to 23 February 2013 for the creation of Act I, in which ten young Moroccan artists took part. AC/E has decided to support the second phase of the project by assisting with the final programme of Act I and the residency and LAB_REC workshop for the creation of Act II with Spanish artists.

The Espace Darja in Casablanca is devoted to creation and training in dance and body movement arts. Since its establishment, the Espace Darja, directed by Meryem Jazouli, has carried out various projects always involving other art forms in its reflexion process and opening up dance to other languages. The Espacio Darja participates, supports and is involved in different projects at both the local and international levels, and provides a platform for exchange, experimentation, meeting and presentation on the art scene.
