The upcoming Buenos Aires International Book Fair is the 45th edition of the most important cultural event in South America and an opportunity to reassert its role in the world of books published in Spanish and culture. The choice of Barcelona as this year’s guest city of honour marks a unique chance to present this open city, which generates culture and has close ties to literature and the book industry. Barcelona is a leading name in publishing in Latin America and a city with a thriving literary tradition where many writers and translators live. It is also home to important links in the book chain – literary agencies, publishers, printing houses, distributors, bookshops and public library – and hosts a dozen literary festivals that grant important prizes to Catalan and Spanish writers.
#Desiderata | Therefore, as well as supporting the participation of Spanish creators in the professional symposiums and other activities designed to promote reading and books through the PICE mobility grants, Acción Cultural Española (AC/E) has launched ‘Desiderata’, a special programme that will run on 3, 4 and 5 May to promote the presence of Spanish librarians at the main Latin American book fairs. It thus fosters professional exchanges between the various agents involved in the book chain and promotes direct purchases of books to improve the biodiversity of libraries. The professionals invited to take part in this first edition are the project’s curator, Carme Fenoll, and four Catalan librarians: Neus Castellanos (Biblioteca Xavier Benguerel), Virginia Cierco (Biblioteca Bon Pastor), Walter Llorach (Biblioteca Esquerra de l’Eixample-Agustí Centelles) and Gemma Ciuró (Biblioteca Comarcal de Blanes).
