Bienal Centroamericana 2016

Bienal Centroamericana 2016

The Central American Biennial started out in 1998. The past nine editions of this biennial, which is promoted by a group of regional professionals and entrepreneurs, have each been held in one of the Central American capitals and have brought together works by artists from the countries belonging to the organisation: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama.

A different approach has been taken to the tenth edition of the biennial, of which Tamara Díaz Bringas is general curator. It will take place in Puerto Limón and San José, Costa Rica, and will feature nearly 70 artists and groups from Central America, together with international guests. Entitled ‘Todas las vidas’ (All lives), it consists of a programme of exhibitions, interventions in public areas, performances, laboratories and workshops.

AC/E is supporting the participation of Jeletón with Historia política de la flores (Political history of flowers), a graphic installation and a performance. It consists of a series of drawings and performances that have been offering a new perspective on floral iconographies since 2014. It surveys the representation of flowers in collective repertoires spanning from storytelling to decoration, poetry, botany and songs, among others. Historia política de las flores analyses their various public and political sides, resistance and countervisuality, translated into several languages and in different interpretations. The 10th Central American Biennial will present a selection of ink drawings on paper and a new production executed in situ of a drawing in large format. The work will be brought to life in a performance based on words during the opening ceremony of the biennial.
Historia política de las flores has been shown in a different format in two solo exhibitions at Galería La Taller (Bilbao, 2014 and 2015), Kadist Foundation (as part of the group show ‘Canibalia’ curated by Julia Morandeira) and Halfhouse (Barcelona, under preparation).
