Oslo Pilot is a two-year research project that explores the role of art in and for the public realm. Oslo Pilot’s 2015-2016 programme is aimed at exploring the intersecting temporalities of the artwork, the periodic art event and the public sphere.
From May to October 2016, artist Francesc Ruiz willwork on a specific project for the city of Oslo. Theartist will complete a residency in order to discover and practice in the city of Oslo for two weeks and give shape to, and subsequently produce, a new work based on the history of comics. The artist is taking part in the Oslo Pilot programme’s Art Pilot projects, which are devoted to exploring and producing new work in the public realm. His project set out to question and sometimes pervert the public sphere in order to address how it is built, mechanisms for circulation and reception policies.
---------------
The Art Pilots of Oslo Pilot are newly produced works of art and new events in the public sphere. These projects are flexible, experimental models that explore the limits and possibilities of public space, putting to the test ways of producing and structuring programmes and means of presentation.
Through comic strips Francesc Ruiz tells stories that take place in the same spot where he is telling the story. His work focuses chiefly on drawing, with which he explores the semantics of comic books and vignettes in order to tell stories in the street and stage actions that are carried out by large groups of people in different settings. A complex, fascinating visual universe thus unfolds which gives rise to many critical interpretations of a tale connected with specific parts of the city.
This residency is allowing both artists to produce their first project in Norway.
