Maider Garayo has been selected to participate in the prestigious WIELS residency, a unique opportunity for visual artists seeking to expand their creative horizons.
WIELS, a renowned contemporary art center in Brussels, offers visual artists the opportunity to immerse themselves in a stimulating and enriching environment for six months. Maide Garayo will have access to a personal work studio, accommodation, a financial grant to support her stay, personalized mentorship with art professionals, and the opportunity to participate in the various activities organized by the center.
This residency is a springboard for artists who wish to develop their practice in an international context, interact with other creators and experts, and present their work in a renowned space.
Maide Garayo lives and works in Iruña. A graduate in Arts and a Master's in Research and Creation in Art, her research and production focus on constructing a body for the image, traversing its flat surface and wounding it, transforming it into an object. She holds a degree in Engraving and Printing Techniques and is currently pursuing a University Expert Program in Cultural Studies, Affects, and Situated Knowledge. Her work has been shown in both solo and group exhibitions across Navarre and the Basque Country. Her most recent solo exhibition was at Montehermoso Kulturgunea (Gasteiz, 2025). She has participated in several residencies for the development of her artistic production, including those at the Centro Huarte (Iruña, 2021) and Tabakalera (Donostia, 2025).
CALL FOR APPLICATIONS Deadline: All documentation must be received at residency@wiels.org by 11:59 pm on Sunday, March 9, 2025. Residency period: Between July 9th and December 31st, 2025.
Artists over 21 years old, who are not students, with legal capacity and Spanish nationality or residing in Spain and who have contributed to the Spanish art scene in recent years may participate in the call. The Residency is aimed at people who seek to develop their artistic practice in a professional context, through projects that involve experimentation, research and/or reflection.
Candidates can work with any medium, but must have developed at least two years of professional career and have participated in several exhibitions. The residency is focused especially on emerging artists and those with a long professional career who are interested in reorienting their creative process or carrying out a research process or a new project compared to those they have developed so far.
