Prominent among the numerous initiatives staged in connection with the 33rd ARCOmadridart fair is the choice of Finland as guest country. A selection of galleries made by Leevi Haapala, curator of the Kiasma art museum in Helsinki, will bring this contemporary art market closer to Madrid. The #FocusFinland programme will be coordinated by Frame Visual Art Finlandand run with the collaboration of Team Finland– the Finnish Embassy in Spain, the Finnish Ibero-American Institute and the Finnish Trade Centre (Finpro).
Following an analysis of the different international art scenes and a joint study by the fair’s organising committee and the management of IFEMA (the trade fair organisation), #FocusFinland has been chosen as one of the main programmes of this year’s ARCOmadrid, which will also feature the sections General Programme, #SoloProjects and #Opening. In addition to strengthening ties between both countries’ institutions, galleries and other agents of contemporary art, one of the chief purposes of the choice of Finland as a guest country is to enhance knowledge of Finnish art in Spain and Latin America and to attract a new Scandinavian public to ARCOmadrid.
As in previous years, ARCOmadrid and AC/E, through the PICE visitor programme, are designing the guests’ agendas of meetings with Spanish artists and professionals from the contemporary art sector and art centres in Spain, among others, adapting them to the professional profile and interests of each of the foreign professionals. In addition, for these meetings a team of people selected by ARCOmadrid and AC/E will accompany them on the visits, coordinating and supervising their activity. AC/E is furthermore increasing its involvement in this year’s event by organising a debate on artists’ residency projects curated by Juan de Nieves, to be held in connection with the fair.
