With a 44-year track record, Alcine has made a name for itself in Spanish and European short films in the centre of the Iberian Peninsula.
It is one of the country’s oldest and most prestigious festivals and its chief aim is to discover new talents. Accomplished directors such as Alejandro Amenábar, Fernando León de Aranoa, Santiago Segura, Daniel Sánchez Arévalo, Juan Antonio Bayona and Javier Rebollo made their debuts with short films at Alcine.
Many foreign festival programmers and buyers visit Alcine to discover Spanish short films, and the festival is thus a launching pad for makers of short films, as it gives them an opportunity to show their work abroad.
From 7 to 14 November Alcine 44 will be staging a broad variety of activities, prominent among which are the national competition and the European competition for short films. There will also be two competitions for Spanish feature-length films by new filmmakers, with prizes awarded by the audience. A series of educational programmes will be shown aimed at children and young people and at learning languages through short films. The parallel sections, which also deal with topical issues and explore new film trends, are complemented with outdoor screenings, exhibitions, concerts and entertaining film and comedy nights. Alcine features films for all audiences and all age groups.
Planners Thorkil Asmussen (International Short Film Festival Oberhausen, Germany), Miguel Dias (Curtas Vila do Conde, Portugal) and Linda O. Olszewski (Shorts that Matter, USA) will be attending the 44th Alcine thanks to the collaboration of AC/E.
