Treasures of the Spanish Crown

Tesoros de la Corona Española (Treasures of the Spanish Crown) is an exhibition of masterpieces from the 15th to 19th centuries loaned by Spain's Patrimonio Nacional (National Heritage) to the National Museum in Krakow. The exhibition arrives on the heels of the formal opening in Madrid of 'Poland. Treasures and Art Collections', organized by the National Museum in Krakow at the Royal Palace of Madrid. Both exhibitions mark Poland's Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

The show Treasures of the Spanish Crown reveals the history of Spanish art on a grand scale, representing a hugely significant and pioneering venture in Poland. It brings together outstanding historical treasures of the utmost artistic value, and offers a brief guide to the history of Spain's official royal collections.

The works which have travelled to Krakow include the output of some of the great masters of art history: El Greco, Goya, Ribera, Titian, Veronese and Zurbarán. Of particular significance to Polish visitors will be the portraits of the future King Zygmunt Vasa III and Princess Anna Maria Vasa, painted by Marcin Kober. Works of decorative art are also included, ranging from jewellery and armour to porcelain, glassware and furniture.

The works have been loaned by the Royal Palace of Madrid, the Madrid Royal Armoury, the Royal Monastery of Santa Clara, in Tordesillas, the Royal Monastery of San Lorenzo and the Royal Site of San Lorenzo in El Escorial.
