The exhibition focuses above all on the nameless women who were the true protagonists in the shadows of the huge transformation undergone by Spanish society. The assembled images are intended to set up the cliched picture of women presented for years in Europe through certain cultural representations, such as, for example, Bizet's opera Carmen, against a complex and subtle image much more in line with reality.
Protagonists in the shadows bears witness to the true role played by women, cornerstone of the changes undergone by Spain and their own evolution through three thematic sections: Work; Domestic Life/Public Life and Leisure, Sport, Science, Culture, reflecting the incorporation of women in the social, professional, scientific and cultural spheres, in both urban and rural settings, without overlooking their role in the domestic field.
