The year 2013 commemorates the 500thanniversary of the arrival in Florida of Juan Ponce de León leading to the exploration of North America and the beginning of what is now the United States. Ponce’s landing marked the start of a Spanish presence which lasted more than 300 years and extended from Florida to Alaska through Texas, the Mississippi Valley, New Mexico, Arizona and California.
Despite the magnitude of Spain’s contribution, it has always been given secondary importance in both American and Spanish history books. The 5thCentenary provides an opportunity to strengthen cultural and economic ties between the two countries and to familiarise their respective inhabitants with the history they share. For this purpose AC/E has prepared an ambitious programme of activities to be held in Miami from May to December 2013.
