Titled A School of Schools, the 4th Istanbul Design Biennial will stretch both the space and time of the traditional design event, manifesting as a flexible year-long programme within which to respond to global acceleration, generating alternative methodologies, outputs and forms of design and education. A School of Schools manifests as a set of dynamic learning formats encouraging creative production, sustainable collaboration, and social connection. Exploring eight themes, the learning environment is a context of empowerment, reflection, sharing and engagement, providing reflexive responses to specific situations.
The Spanish artists Ana Peñalba, dpr-barcelona and Carlos Monleón have been invited to present their projects with the support of AC/E:
Ana Peñalba: "TRANSARCHITECTURE"
The techno-touristification of architecture and the form of design when knowledge is disattached from their geographical contest. When Architecture goes beyond Architecture, its definition goes beyond the authority of the Architect. Its temporality, identity and, even its design qualities, get compromised by the continuous flow of information provided by the press, social media and other sources of communication. Which are the new challenges that Design is facing due to the globalization, the fragmentation and, the hyper-densification of the information and, how this will transform the profession of being a Designer? Peñalba is interested in investigating how the
technologization of Knowledge is affecting our way of approaching the cities and how this virtual status -completely detached from their geographical contest-, is challenging the veracity of design.
dpr-barcelona: "THE PARASITIC COUNCIL".
The Parasitic Council feeds, discuss, digests and elaborates ideas from the outcomes of other schools and group of learners. By means of creating temporary ready-to-use spaces of reading and debate, the Parasitic Council scratches, discusses and nurtures itself from other schools’ and learners’ ideas. Temporary arrangements will be materialized into exhibition rooms, temporary occupation of staircases, a set of chairs or the rooftop. Originally feeding from the intellectual material (books, catalogs, journals, eaLets) presented by other schools attending the biennale, the Parasitic Council arranges temporary settlements where to share the contents and discuss ideas
Carlos Monléon Gendall: "COMPOST SCHOOL"
It’s a school on molecular fictions around ingestion and natural metabolisms. While proposing a renewed sense of community established around dialogues on food, this school intends to create a space for inquiry and reflection about personal histories around ingestion and natural metabolisms, agriculture and territorial disputes, forms of narration and molecular fictions, oral tradition and examples of environmental resistance and resilience. It comprises six gatherings distributed along time, with guests from distinct backgrounds and geographies who will provide workshops around their food study practice, projects and reflections. Throughout the temporality of the school, participants are expected to develop a case study research around food and speculative design in relation to the topics proposed, which will be presented on an open day in the end of the program. The list of guest lecturers include Carlos Monléon, a speculative designer and chef from Spain developing research on prototypes, fermentation and cybernetics.
