Performing Gender 2018. ‘Dance makes Differences’

Performing Gender 2018. ‘Dance makes Differences’

Performing Gender is a two year (June 2017- May 2019) capacity building programme aiming to provide a new generation of European dance artists and professionals with a set of knowledge, skills and tools, useful to develop a new form of narrative for LGBT* identities in Europe.

Citizens identifying as LGBT in different parts of Europe live today in dramatically diverse contexts of social and cultural recognition. Someone with an LGBT identity growing up in Spain will have a different experience to someone growing up in the UK. Dance and gender expressions are based on bodies, and encompass our notions of beauty and freedom. Dance is therefore the perfect artistic language to explore these themes and investigate and shape gender expressions.

The Spanish participation in this training week in Leeds (part of stage 1 of this project),from 26th May to 3rd June 2018, includes the following:
- Bilbao native Koldo Arostegui González, dance maker and co-creator of ‘The Shameless Body’
- Dance dramaturg, Sergio Martínez Vila, Asturias native now working in Madrid
- Laura Kumin, the Artistic Director of Paso a 2 in Madrid
