The Spanish writer Elena Medel has been selected for the Malba Writers' Residence, thanks to the support of Acción Cultural Española (AC/E). For the third consecutive year, the Malba Writers' Residence (REM) receives a resident of Spanish origin. Elena Medel travels to Buenos Aires in August and is the third of the four residents invited in 2023. The Malba Writers Residence (REM) is an initiative of Malba Literatura that has the collaboration of Ampersand as an institutional partner, the support of AC/E and of Cultural Patronage of the Government of the City of Buenos Aires.
Elena Medel (Córdoba, Spain, 1985) was born in Córdoba although she lives in Madrid. She has published the poetry books "My First Bikini" (DVD, 2002; translated into English and Swedish), "Tara" (DVD, 2006) and "Chatterton" (Visor, 2014), brought together in "A Black Day in a house of lies” (Visor, 2015); the essays "The wizard world" (Ariel, 2015) and "Everything there is to know about poetry" (Ariel, 2018); and the novel "Las maravillas" (Anagrama, 2020), translated into fifteen languages, winner of the Francisco Umbral Award for Book of the Year 2020 and included in the Dublin Literary Award 2023 longlist. Among other awards, she has won the XXVI Loewe Award for Young Creation, the 2016 Princess of Girona Foundation Award in the Arts and Letters category and the 2021 Leonardo grant for Cultural Researchers and Creators from the BBVA Foundation. She has been a writer-in-residence at George Mason University's Alan Cheuse International Writers Center. She runs the La Bella Varsovia poetry label.
The residency is aimed at writers and is established as a forum for exchange and literary creation based on the invitation to spend five weeks in Buenos Aires, as part of their artistic and professional development. The objective of this agreement is to create a bridge with authors, publishers and managers from Spain and Argentina, deepen existing dialogues, and create new networks of work and creation between both countries.
A jury of experts made up of John M. Coetzee, Christian Lund, Cristina Fuentes La Rocha, Santiago Tobón and Soledad Costantini chose three residents for 2023, two from anywhere in the world for the months of April-May and September-October and another resident of Spanish nationality for the August-September stay, thanks to the support of Acción Cultural Española.
In addition to time and appropriate space to work on their writing project, this Residency offers those selected to participate in various public activities around the speciality and the author's works, their writing and creation processes, as well as different sessions together with other colleagues and local organizations.
