‘But there is a simple fact that spares us many considerations and that nobody can honestly deny; this fact is the absolute mistrust Spaniards have of politics. They expect nothing good of it; brimming with suspicion, they have come to think that any politician is but a vulgar ambitious man or a vulgar businessman. The lack of prestige of the politician in public awareness knows no limits.’
These works were uttered by José Ortega y Gasset as part of his lecture on ‘Old and new politics’ delivered in March 1914. This lecture, which coincided with the presentation of the Liga de Educación Política Española (League of Spanish political education), is taken as the point of departure of the Generation of ’14, a group of men and women committed to Spain’s destiny.
In collaboration with the Teatro de la Abadía, AC/E is organising a cycle of lectures entitled La aventura intelectual de la generación del 14 (The intellectual adventure of the Generation of ’14), which sets out to recall some of its leading figures in order to discuss how their reflections are relevant today.
