In 2016 the 31st edition of Midnight Sun Film Festival presents a rich selection of contemporary highlights of European cinema, showcase filmmaker retrospectives with acclaimed guests and highlight film heritage from classics to rediscoveries. The biggest cultural event in Finland’s northern region will be held in Sodankylä, a village of 5.000 inhabitants; located 120 kilometers above the Arctic Circle. In 2016 the festival is expected to attract an audience of 34 000 entries.
Midnight Sun Film Festival is held annually in June during the magical period of nighless nights in the northern part of Finland. This coming edition will mark the 31st year. The up-and-coming edition will present approx. 100 feature films which will be screened around the clock during the five-day-festival. To accompany the screenings the festival will invite the most acclaimed filmmakers and new voices of the cinema to the festival for dialogue with the audience.
“Spanish Talent in the Arctic” Saga of the filmmaking by the Trueba Family will be the special focus at the 31st Midnight Sun Film Festival. This internationally acclaimed film event will take place on June 15ht-19th, 2016. Awarded vetaran film maker Fernando Trueba will attend the festival in order to talk about his life work for the first time in Finland. This long-awaited visit will be a continuation of the festival’s commitment to highlight Spanish filmmakers in the northern part of Europe. Past retrospectives and visits to the Midnight Sun Film Festival include Spanish directors such as Victor Erice, Julio Medem (whose film Los amantes del Círculo Polar was inspired by the visit to the festival in 1993), Mercedes Alvarez and Javier Rebollo. Mr. Trueba’s visit and retrospective will include a special encounter between two celebrated directors - a two hour in-depth discussion accompanying the screenings will be led by Finnish director and festival founder Mika Kaurismäki who has personally invited Mr. Trueba to attend the festival. This will be a unique dialogue between two celebrated filmmakers and thus recorded for the future generations. The festival will also be attended by Trueba's longterm partner and producer Christina Huete who will accompany the Q&E's in order to give further insight to the production side of filmmaking in Spain. To highlight the contemporary filmmaking in Spain the festival has invited Jonas Trueba. Midnight Sun Film Festival will present his work and invate to him participate in discussion with the audience and other directors of the younger generation. This will be the first time Jonas Trueba’s work will be screened and discussed in Finland. This tribute to Trueba Family continues the festival’s commitment to introducing Spanish director in the northern part of Europe.
