Setouchi Triennale was established in 2010 with the chief aim of revitalising the cultural activity of these Japanese islands in the Setouchi region through a selection of contemporary art projects by both Japanese and foreignartists that should be inspired by the nature areas of these islands and their connection with the sea. The idea is to make the natural and artistic potential of this part of Japan known to the rest of the world and to promote interaction and cooperation between the local and visiting population.
Approximately 175 artists from 22 different countries and regions are taking part in this second Setouchi Triennale. Among those chosen are the Spaniards Jasmina Llobet & Luis Fernández Pons for their work No one Wins – Multibasket, a permanent intervention on the island of Teshima.
The work is a sculpture in the form of a basketball court with several hoops located in a public space where residents and visitors can get together to play. Unlike in the original game, the various hoops allow players to use their imagination and make up their own rules.
In response to the request of the organisers, AC/E has assessed the importance of the event and has agreed to collaborate in this initiative by supporting the presence of Spanish professionals in Japan and fostering knowledge of their works in a year in which AC/E has started up its Programme for the Internationalisation of Spanish Culture (PICE) and the Year of Spain in Japan/Year of Japan in Spain are being doubly celebrated.
