Invited by the department of Hispanic Studies of the University of Sheffield, the writer Belén Gopegui is taking part in the “Gender and sexuality” module with lectures and seminars focused mainly on her novel La conquista del aire (1998) and its film adaptation Las razones de mis amigos (Friends Have Reasons, 2000). AC/E is supporting the programme through the PICE mobility grants.
Sheffield University’s department of Hispanic Studies runs an annual programme for inviting Spanish creators to take part in its cultural and academic life and offers them a public platform for presenting their work outside the lecture halls to help enhance knowledge and appreciation of Spanish culture within and outside the university.
These activities give students the chance to interact with the Spanish author and learn more about women’s literary and film production, as well as about Spanish culture after the transition to democracy. The writer is also teaching a translation workshop for final year students and is taking part in a research seminar that is open to all students at Sheffield and other British universities. Also in connection with the seminar, the Instituto Cervantes will be showing the film Las razones de mis amigos followed by a question and answer session with the writer.
Belén Gopegui made her debut on the literary scene in 1992 with her novel La escala de los mapas (trans. The Scale of Maps) She published Tocarnos la cara three years later and consolidated her career in 1998 with La conquista del aire. Her latest novel, El comité de la noche, was published in 2014.
