Residency Artista X Artista 2015

Artista X Artista is an initiative that is being carried out in different formats with the aim of establishing horizontal relations between younger artists and a growing network of international cultural institutions and agents. The project is a platform for international artists in residence in Havana. Part of the philosophy of Artista X Artista was embodied in the Open Studio concept started up in 2007 by the Carlos Garaicoa studio in Madrid. The platform provides the opportunity and conditions for international artists to enjoy a stay in Havana, where they can share experiences with local cultural agents, teach workshops and carry out fieldwork and research in situ.

Artista X Artista also stems from the need to find and generate support from within the artistic community in a country like Cuba, where institutional management is insufficient to meet the needs of emerging creators. The first edition of the Artista X Artista Residency programme has invited the young Spanish creator Cristina Garrido for a one-month stay with the support of AC/E’s Programme for the Internationalisation of Spanish Culture. The scheduled events include a three-person exhibition, Artista X Artista (I), which opens at 5pm on Thursday 26 November at AXA. It features some of the landmark projects of the young artist (This Is Art Now Vol.1, 2013, Veil of Invisibility, 2011) and other recent pieces (#JWIITMTESDSA? (Just what is it that makes today´s exhibitions so different, so appealing?), 2015), along with the work of two other artists: Dora Maurer (Budapest, 1937) and Carlos Garaicoa (Havana, 1967).
