Álvaro Escalona (Escalona’s brothers) is the Spanish resident selected to participate in the residency programme of the European Ceramic Workcentre (EKWC) for 12 weeks, between August 15 and November 6, 2024.
The European Ceramic Workcentre (EKWC) and Acción Cultural Española organize this residency aimed at Spanish artists, designers and architects who have never worked with ceramics before.
Álvaro Escalona is a composer and sound artist. Graduated in Composition from the CSMM in 2012, he continued his master's studies in composition at the ESMAE in Porto (2013-2019) and in Madrid, where he obtained a Master's Degree in Electroacoustic Composition at the CSKG. His artistic line is developed around experimentation with electroacoustic tools, soundscape and sound design. He has collaborated with different artists and participated in exhibitions with sound installations, such as "Trrr..." at the Palacio de la Madraza, Granada; "Des-arraigo" in Iniciarte, Málaga (2015); and "Between the forms that go towards the serpent and the forms that seek the crystal" at the CAAC in Seville (2020). In addition to producing music for various concerts and shows, he has received the first Casa da Música / ESMAE de Porto composition prize for his work "Seguiriya" and the first "Universidad y Ateneo de Málaga" prize for "Osedax".
Álvaro is part of the artistic collective "Escalona Brothers", together with David Escalona, visual artist. In 2022, they decided to start a new collaborative stage motivated by the need to develop sound art projects that address topics of common interest. To do this, they rely on the collaboration of experts from various disciplines, such as science, anthropology and history, among others. This group is dedicated to the creation of multisensory projects accessible to both people with and without disabilities, using new technologies. Its interdisciplinary approach and commitment to inclusion seek to enrich the artistic experience, making art a space for encounter and reflection accessible to all.
The selected Spanish resident will have return flights from their place of residence in Spain, accommodation, technical advice and access to the EKWC facilities. He will also have access to technical equipment according to his request and with a cooking and material cost of up to 1,000 euros, according to the prices that Ekwc communicates to its partners. At the end of the stay, you will receive 2,500 euros from ACE (after the corresponding invoice) to cover the maintenance and production costs incurred during the stay.
