Located in the historical town of Tui in southern Galicia, close to the Portuguese border, Play-Doc arose in March 2005 as an independent project that which has succeeded in establishing a type of festival that is out of the ordinary: combining a small but thorough programme and a huge number of visitors, it is extraordinarily participatory and diverse.
Its various objectives are to familiarise the public with fringe cinema that is hard to find and to create a space for dialogue and exchange. This year, Play-Doc sets out to explore in greater depth the avenues established in previous years, midway between fiction and documentary, and focuses on some of the areas addressed by the festival, such as direct cinema and portraiture. It offers audiences a careful selection of the latest trends in non-fiction films from all over the world and the most notable examples of national production, underpinned by a powerful retrospective and complemented by live music and interesting training activities.
Also in connection with the programme, the festival has organised a seminar on Criticism and Programming that brings together nationally and internationally renowned critics, filmmakers and programmers. Through its Visitors grants, AC/E has facilitated the presence of Claire Simon (French producer), Gabe Klinger (international critic of Brazilian origin who lectures at the University of Columbia), Pamela Cohn (American critic based in Berlin), Toni D’Angela (international critic from Italy), JP Sniadecki (filmmaker and lecturer at Harvard University) and Cintia Gil (Portuguese programmer).
