In 2007 the Historic New Orleans Collection and Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra introduced a programme to highlight the city’s classical music heritage, Musical Louisiana: America’s Cultural Heritage, an educational experience for primary-school pupils and a concert for music lovers.
The 9th edition of Musical Louisiana: America’s Cultural Heritage (2015) focuses on the important and not so well known influence of Spain on the development of the music of New Orleans, with a programme that explores the rich ties between Spain and Louisiana. This year, with the support of the PICE mobility grants, the Spanish baritone Damián del Castillo is taking part in the programme in a single concert scheduled for 7.30 pm on 4 February 2015 at St. Louis Cathedral in New Orleans, in which he will perform “Ah, per sempre, io ti perdei” from Bellini’s I puritani. The concert will be streamed live through LPOmusic.com at 7.30 pm (New Orleans time) on 4 February 2015.
Damián del Castillo was born in Úbeda (Jaén). He studied music and singing in Malaga with Alicia Molina and furthered his training for two years at the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofia in Madrid. He won the 9th City of Seville “New Voices” contest in 2011 and was runner up in the 11th Acislo Fernández Carriedo and the 3rd Villa de Colmenar singing competitions, as well as receiving a special mention at the Malaga young performers’ festival. He has performed as a soloist at the Teatro Real, Teatro de la Zarzuela and Auditorio Nacional in Madrid; the Sala Toscanini in the Teatro de la Scala in Milan; and the Sala de Los Espejos in the Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, among other venues.
