Mexico photographed by Luis Buñuel

Mexico photographed by Luis Buñuel

This exhibition, produced by the Filmoteca Española in collaboration with the Centro Buñuel in Calanda, pays tribute to Buñuel on the twenty-fifth anniversary of his death by making known an unpublished part of his work. AC/E is supporting the showing of the exhibition during the Sao Paulo International Film Festival, the 38th edition of which is devoted to Spanish films.

Luis Buñuel is undoubtedly one of the most prestigious film directors. Much has been written about him and many exhibitions have been staged. However, there are still a few aspects of his work that are little known. The holdings of the Filmoteca Española include a collection of photographs taken by him when seeking locations for his Mexican films and this material, on display in the exhibition, illustrates the work performed prior to making his films and also shows us another side of the filmmaker.

The collection consists of nearly a thousand photographs that are part of the Buñuel legacy and were acquired from his heirs by the Spanish Ministry of Culture and assigned to the Filmoteca Española. Although they are not artistic photographs, they have sufficient quality to be considered an aesthetic element worthy of admiration, and make attractive exhibits. However, their greatest value is the keys they provide to gaining a better insight into the work of Luis Buñuel and to shedding light on little known aspects of his work.
