Melbourne Writers Festival is part of the prestigious Word Alliance, an association of eight international literary festivals that support, show and disseminate the work of writers all over the world and foster the creation of international literary projects, such as bringing the Edinburgh World Writers’ Conference to Melbourne in 2013.
Founded in 1986 by a private organisation and the city council of Melbourne, which since then has held the title of UNESCO City of Literature, it is considered to be one of the most important cultural events in Australia, as every year it brings together some 500 writers from all over the world. In 2013 the festival scheduled 382 activities and attracted more than 50,000 visitors. Each year Melbourne Writers Festival strengthens its position as an international literary festival by attracting the best foreign authors who are, in turn, one of the main lures for the public.
Taking part in this festival provides international authors with a unique opportunity to develop their career in Australasia, as MWF offers its international participants sessions and involvement in at least three public events, as well as in other places in the Victoria region. Its bookshop also undertakes to stock the publications of the participating writers, who take part in many promotional events.
This year, together with other institutions such as the Instituto Cervantes in Sydney, Brisbane Writers Festival, Sydney Jewish Writers Festival, Queensland Poetry Festival, Taranaki International Arts Festival and The National Trust, MWF is organising different events in several Australian cities for participating international writers. AC/E is collaborating through the PICE mobility programme by supporting the participation of Inma Monsé in the festival.
