Since being held for the first time in 1996, MasDanza has been gaining ground year after year. Starting out initially as a regional event, it became nationwide in scope in its second year and has been open to the participation of international creators since its sixth year. The festival is a launching pad for new local, national and international talent and an international showcase for the Canary Islands.
The festival has two official sections in competition: the solo contest and the choreography contest. It also features a number of parallel activities: guest companies, a break-dance championship, Masdanza Showcase, a dance marathon, exhibitions, dance in open spaces, lectures, courses and dance workshops. The organisation is aware of how difficult it is for new creators to carve a niche for themselves on the professional scene and therefore guarantees their participation in important national and international meetings, circuits and dance spaces, as well as supporting dancers with scholarships and grants. A selection committee made up of prominent national and international figures is formed to choose the participants from the applications received.
AC/E is collaborating in the 2013 event through its visitor programme by supporting the attendance of three specialists from foreign institutions:
• Anna Theodora Maria Van Dolen , Julidans Foundation (Amsterdam, Netherlands)
• Jong-Ho Lee, Sidance International Dance Festival (Seoul, South Korea)
• Katsuhiro Nakatomi, Yokahama Art Foundation (Yokohama, Japan)
