MASDANZA, International Contemporary Dance Festival of the Canary Islands

MASDANZA, the International Contemporary Dance Festival of the Canary Islands, started out in Gran Canaria in 1996 at the initiative of Natalia Medina, who has been its director ever since, and with the support of the culture department of the council of  San Bartolomé de Tirajana. The festival plays an important role in the world of culture in the Canary Islands.

MASDANZA is an international showcase for the Canary Islands, which for several days becomes the nerve centre of the cutting-edge world dance scene thanks to this event of key importance to the local community.

The 21st edition of MASDANZA offers a varied schedule of activities ranging from performances to the audience’s prize, outdoor dance in the “Dance in open spaces” section, a programme for children – “Cultural amusements” – and the spectacular international break-dance championship, 11th Breaking MASDANZA. The aim is to reach new audiences and encourage them to become involved in and enjoy this project.

29th Madrid Choreography Competition
The Madrid Choreography Competition is an annual showcase for new contemporary dance pieces. It is open to Spanish and international choreographers (the latter must live and work in Spain).

The competition started out as a choreography contest in 1987 and has grown in keeping with the needs and possibilities of the profession, becoming a major catalyst. With the slogan "Expanding Movement”, the competition promotes choreography projects, networking and partnerships between artists, as well as training, programming and the dissemination of dance.

The prizes include choreographers’ residencies and international scholarships, which the jury can combine with cash prizes to give a boost to choreographers’ careers, depending on the individual profile of each one. Thanks to the national and international collaborators, the competition provides a network of support, infrastructure and advice as an investment in the participants’ future. It also plays an important role in bringing Spanish choreographers into contact with national and international programmers.
