MAfestival Brugge 2019

MAfestival Brugge 2019

The 56th edition of MAfestival, under the heading Ex machina, explores the intriguing bond between god, man and machine. By becoming smarter, healthier and older, with help of technology, we resemble the inaccessible gods we have always envied. But will the fall come after pride? MAfestival looks for the answers, guiding the audience through music about human gods and divine people, along the rise of musical machines and the downside of technology.

AC/E supports the participation of the Spanish ensemble Tasto Solo with a concert of keyboard music for and by Henry VIII. Guillermo Pérez is unquestionably a pioneer of the organetto, a miniature organ that was an absolute favourite in the Middle Ages. Together with his Tasto Solo ensemble, he takes us back to 16th century England, with court songs and grounds by, among others, Hugh Aston, Thomas Preston and Henry Vlll, himself a talented composer.

MAfestival Brugge is an internationally renowned festival for early music, boasting a daring programme and an innovative outlook on tradition. Every summer, it presents and creates a wide range of activities in the historical setting of Bruges and its surroundings. These activities include a thematic concert series, grounded in a coherent and through-provoking dramaturgy; the prestigious International Competitions Musica Antiqua, a series of Fringe concerts, and the musical bikeride VéloBaroque.
