In 1928 the Portuguese painter Helena Vieira da Silva moved to Paris, where she met and eventually married fellow painter Arpad Szenes in 1930. Portugal rejected both painters at the time, refusing to grant them Portuguese nationality. In 1948 the French government began to collect works by these two artists, acknowledging them as French citizens in 1956.
The couple’s house and studio were well known and were always open to young, up-and-coming and unknown artists, whom they introduced to the Parisian art scene from their position as recognised and respected figures.
Based on and inspired by the couple’s attentiveness to others, a similar meeting of international artists will take place at the Aprad Szenes and Vieira da Silva exhibition in order to create a performance, in which the Spanish dancer and actor Abraham Hurtado will be taking part with the collaboration of AC/E.
From the start of the project, both art forms will coexist within the context of the museum. The paintings will be displayed in relation to the meeting, support and exchange between international artists as the main focus, while the performance will represent the artists’ collaborative work in progress.
