Literature and being gypsy. Hay Festival Segovia 2014

AC/E is collaborating on this year’s Hay Festival Segovia by organising and producing a programme of activities entitled Literatura y gitanidad (Literature and being gypsy), which features several events designed to provide an insight into the intense relationship between literature and the gypsy people through their oral tradition, topics and music.

The programme includes the following activities:

-  Storytelling (2 sessions, 26 September, Plaza Mayor): Cuentos romané (Romany tales) Sebastián Porras and Manuel Cortés.

- Dissemination of popular gypsy tales and legends. The sessions, devised as small-format theatre performances, attract the attention of children and entertain them, while sowing the seed of knowledge of and respect for gypsy culture through one of its most appealing facets: its tales and legends.

-  Discussion (27 September, Sala San Juan de los Caballeros): Hacia una dramaturgia romaní o la gitanidad de Esquilo (Towards a Romany theatre art or the gypsiness of Aeschylus). Taking as a basis the play “The Persians” – the first known to have been written nearly two thousand five hundred years ago – which speaks of war as a monstrous action arising exclusively from the interests of the most powerful, the discussion is approached as the sum of reflections and sensations on ‘tragedy’ as an artistic act and as a history of the fate of oppressed and minority peoples.

-  Recital (27 September, after the discussion, Sala San Juan de los Caballeros): Vientos del pueblo nos llevan...Música gitana para Miguel Hernández (Winds of the people carry us… Gypsy music for Miguel Hernández). Fraskito (voice and guitar) and Josué Ronkío (bass and percussion). This session will be dedicated to the memory of Félix Grande, who recently died. A poet, flamenco scholar and critic hailed as one of the greatest renewers of Spanish poetry of the 1960s. A keen musician, songwriter and guitarist, he wrote many books, texts and articles that are classics in flamenco. This concert will also be performed in Budapest, in a version with four musicians.
