For nearly five months 150 international artists will take part in this ensemble exhibition that is set to become one of the most important activities of the programme of events scheduled for Marseilles as European Culture of Capital in 2013.
The title of the exhibition, Le Pont, alludes to the classical Greek term pontos. In ancient Greece it was used to designate the sea, which the ancient Greeks viewed as a bridge that connected them with and separated them from other worlds, cultures and possibilities. Even today the Mediterranean continues to be a bridge that connects and separates all the civilisations that are bathed by its waters. The creations of artists from all these shores are the backbone of the exhibition’s argument.
AC/E is collaborating in the project by supporting the Spanish artist Fernando Sánchez Castillo, who has been invited to take part by the Musée d’Art Contemporain of Marseille.
Fernando Sánchez Castillo is participating with his work Spitting Leaders consisting of four freestanding bronze fountains that will be placed at each of the lakes in the Borély public park. The fountains represent Louis XIV, Stalin, Hitler and Franco and they spout water at each other through their mouths. With this work the sculptor explores the relationship between art and power, and between collective historical memory and the force and presence of certain symbols in today’s society.
