Puppet artists from all over the world will meet in Munich to present their contemporary interpretation of puppet performances.
The diverse forms of puppetry will be explored by puppeteers from Great Britain, the USA, Spain –with AC/E's support–, Belgium and France as part of the Internationales Figurentheater Festival (International Puppetry Festival). Far from naïve entertainment for children, the performances are sophisticated theatrical pieces that often even bust the boundaries of the genre. Apart from the performances at various Munich venues, the Munich City Museum will exhibit the puppet installation "Men of Flesh and Cardboard" by America's leading puppeteer company, Bread & Puppet Theater.
The Spanish Xavier Bobès with AC/E's support, presents "Cosas que se olvidan fácilmente“, made only for 5 spectators. The show reflects Spanish history in an intimate and touching way. Through a miscellany of sights and sounds, objects and photos, a fascinating story unfolds, exploring memory and identity. Around a small table, in an intimate, salon setting, a powerful sequence of close-up sensory experiences invokes old memories and invents new ones. Like a magician, or medium at a séance, Xavier Bobés manipulates both past and future.
Since 1996, the international puppet theater festival in Munich is organised by the association Gesellschaft zur Förderung des Puppenspiels e.V. (founded 1950), the Münchner Stadtmuseum and the Schauburg (theater for children) and has brought theaters from more than 25 countries to Munich. Since 2009 the festival has extended to a duration of 12 days with 40 performances for approximately 5000 visitors and has grown to be one of the biggest festivals for puppet theater in southern Germany.
