Hong Kong International Film Festival (HKIFF) is a platform for presenting new film proposals and brings together filmmakers, professionals and film enthusiasts from all over the world. It features a number of complementary activities such as seminars, lectures and exhibitions. The festival is committed to discovering new talents and is also a platform for introducing films to the Chinese and Asian market.
The Spanish director Irene Gutiérrez Torres is presenting her film Hotel Nueva Isla at the 39th edition of the festival with the support of AC/E’s PICE programme.
Hotel Nueva Isla is a documentary set in what was once a luxury hotel in Havana that is now in a dilapidated state and has only one inhabitant, Jorge, who is eager to find something valuable to make his stay there meaningful, and searches over and over again for treasures he believes somebody may have concealed in its colonial-style walls. When eviction is imminent, Jorge realises that what will ensue will not only be the demolition of the hotel but also the end of both a way of life and an era in Cuba.
