Gregory Maqoma and Roberto Olivan met at the P.A.R.T.S. in Brussels in 1996 when they were both students of Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker. They went their separate ways shortly afterwards: Roberto began dancing with ROSAS and soon started organising its work, while teaching and collaborating with other artists at international events. Meanwhile, Gregory became actively involved with the dance community in South Africa, showing his work at various theatres such as the Théâtre de la Ville (Paris), of which he is now an associate artist. Both powerful personalities, Maqoma and Olivan are united by their deep-rooted contact with the traditions and cultures of their native countries and are closely connected with their landscapes and inhabitants, and their ways of expressing emotions. They both live in the south: one in the south of Europe and the other in the south of Africa.
For this project the Belgian composer Laurent Delforge was invited to incorporate his universe of sound into a physical, emotional, balanced, popular and contemporary dance piece. Lonely Together tells of a conversation, a south-south dialogue, a journey of two apparently distant human beings with very different roots yet who express a common vision.
AC/E is collaborating through the PICE mobility grants by supporting the participation of the Spaniard Roberto Olivan.
