Higinia Garay | Graphic novel residency in Angouleme 2024

Higinia Garay is the illustrator selected for this residency, which is organized by Acción Cultural Española (AC/E) and the Cité internationale de la bande dessinée et de l'image, with the collaboration of the French Embassy in Spain. The residency takes place at La Maison des Auteurs de Angoulême (France) for six months, between January and June 2024.

Higinia Garay (Bilbao, 1978) has a degree in Fine Arts and a Postgraduate Degree in Publication Design from the European Institute of Design in Madrid. She has been working as an illustrator and graphic designer since 2002, and in charge of her own studio since 2013, currently focused on illustration. In addition, she combines these activities with teaching in masters and workshops. Higinia has been awarded the "Graphic Creation for Comics" scholarship from the Basque Government in 2019 and in 2021 with the "Crossed Comics Residence" scholarship from Azkuna Zentroa, Center for Contemporary Society and Culture of Bilbao. He has published two graphic novels with the Astiberri publishing house, “Todas nosotras” in 2020 and “La palabra que empeza por A” in 2022. Among his latest notable clients are works carried out for the Elkar publishing house, Mediavaca publishing house, Emakunde, the Basque Government, the newspaper El Correo, the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum, Guggenheim Bilbao, Bilbao City Council, the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, Tabakalera Donosti, the Red Cross, the National Museum ThyssenBornemisza, Editorial Santillana and BBK Live among many others.

The Residency offered in Angouleme aims to promote creation in the specific field of graphic cartoons. To this end, it facilitates the realization of a project selected for its artistic values and its innovative nature in this matter.
