Graphic Novel Residency at the Maison des Auteurs 2023

The cartoonist María Simavilla selected to enjoy the residency at the Maison des Auteurs 2023. María has won with the project "Songs for the girl who eventually dies" (provisional title), a graphic novel about love, heartbreak, illness and friendship.
 
María Simavilla worked on her first illustrated book when she was only four years old. It is a space adventure entitled "Pepito and the Astronaut." She since then she has never stopped drawing. She graduated in Fine Arts from USAL (Spain) and has enjoyed an Erasmus scholarship at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia (Italy) where she studied engraving. Her professional career as an illustrator began in 2010. Since then she has not stopped developing. She has worked in many different fields, including press, advertising, audiovisual media, children's and youth publishing, cover design, character design, or textbooks.

The finalists of the selection process are: Andrea Lucio Sotelo and Harold Canizales.

The residency is organized by Acción Cultural Española (AC/E) and the Cité internationale de la bande dessinée et de l'image, with the collaboration of the French Embassy in Spain. The residence takes place at La Maison des Auteurs de Angoulême (France) for six months, between January and June 2023.
