Martin Llavaneras, Elena Matamoro | FMJJ Art Center International Artistic Residency Programme 2024

Martin Llavaneras and Elena Matamoro are the resident artists in this program promoted by the Centro de Arte Fundación María José Jove (FMJJ) and Acción Cultural Española (AC/E). The main objectives of this artistic residency are to facilitate cultural exchange between Spain and Latin America, as well as to generate collaborative networks that strengthen the cultural interrelation between both countries.

The call was aimed at Spanish creators dedicated to contemporary artistic practices in any discipline.

Martin Llavaneras (El Segrià, 1983) lives and works in Barcelona. He studied Fine Arts at the UPV (Bilbao, Spain), HTW (Berlin, Germany), and UB (Barcelona, Spain). He works primarily in the field of sculpture, often in relation to the natural and industrial transformation processes of inorganic, biological, and linguistic materials. The artist studies these cycles and intervenes in them to modify their dynamics and participate in the management, disposition, and modeling of these materials. He investigates infrastructures such as canals, ditches, and cisterns that support agricultural and livestock production and how these structures for the distribution of liquids and materials can be integrated into sculpture. He studies how solid materials, such as wheat, corn, and barley, move and transform into organic resins (starch) for the creation of sculptures. Ideas such as storage, circulation, and oxidation, among others, are present in his work.

Elena Matamoro (Vigo, 1999) is an artist whose work establishes the relationship between art, gender, and nature, with a focus on sound creation and performance. Matamoros (Vigo, 1999) lives and works between Vigo and Basel. She studied Fine Arts at the University of Vigo (2015-2019) and completed a master's degree in Art, Gender, and Nature at the Hochschule für Gestaltung und Kunst (HGK), Basel, Switzerland (2021-2023). Her project starts from the reflection on how human and natural spaces coexist, and how this dialogue can be reinterpreted through installation, sound, and performance. The proposal connects with the landscape of Guadalajara, where she seeks to translate the structure of its streets into a sound and visual composition. The proposal will be inspired by the observation of the environment and the reinterpretation of the traditional ceramics of the region, creating a three-dimensional score that allows the city to be "sounded" through sculptural and sound forms.

The residency period is six weeks, from November to December 2024. Each selected candidate receives a financial grant of 1,500 euros for subsistence, 1,500 euros for project production expenses, travel (Spain-Mexico-Spain), travel medical insurance, accommodation and workspace, assistance and support during the project, and project dissemination and public presentation.
