Flare is a festival of international experimental theatre by emerging artists. It aims to profile and provide support for new international theatre artists with the potential to define the theatre of the future, as well as to establish Manchester as an international hub for new radical theatre makers, to capitalize on the international profile of the city established by the Manchester International Festival, and to galvanize the contemporary theatre audience in Manchester.
AC/E supports the participation in the festival, throuhg the Mobility grants of: 'Grand Applause' by Jorge Dutor and Guillem Mont de Palol, 'Party' by Lara Solano and the company Beaches, 'Molar' by Quim Bigas and 'Actresses Always Lie' by El Pollo campero, comidas para llevar.
'Grand Applause` is a large-scale performance by Jorge Dutor and Guillem Mont de Palol, that offers a translation from an exhibition format into a performance format. It is a curatorial project; a choreography that inhabits a virtual 1:1 scale architecture based on the fiction of the opera 'Carmen' by Bizet, and puts in dialogue the works of three visual and performance artists: Norberto Llopis in the role of Carmen, Luis Urculo in the role of Don José and Bernhard Willhelm as the bullfighter Escamillo. The piece follows the four act structure of the opera and includes a guest performance by the Manchester Chamber Choir.
'Party' is an intimate, immersive dance piece for unconventional spaces created by Beaches, a project led by iara Solano, of performance company Sleepwalk Collective (Basque Country). It is performed with an audience of 10, each wearing wireless headphones & blindfolds throughout the performance, guided & accompanied by a performer. The 30 min show is repeated several times per day. The performance offers a dystopic simulation of a night out that hacks the senses, provoking movement, action and emotion, in a vibrating space where the limits between reality & representation are blurred. Beaches is a performance collective with core members iara Solano and Sammy Metcalf from the Spanish company Sleepwalk Collective in collaborations with Daniela Perez.
'Molar' is a unique, acclaimed and highly interactive solo dance performance that talks about happiness, and the way we move and are moved.
It will be presented in Manchester's historic Royal Exchange building, outside the Royal Exchange Theatre, in what was once described as the biggest room in the world.
'Actresses Always Lie' by El Pollo campero, comidas para lleva. Two Spanish women have really tried to earn a living as actresses. They've taken the roles, lived the part, but now it's time to come clean. This is a charming, political and physical performance that walks us through the dreams and realities of two friends who've never stopped performing. Actresses Always Lie is a performance exploration, using the stereotype and universe of 'the actress' as a springboard to talk about a wide range of subjects, from gender to trade and precariousness.
